You think abortion is wrong? Don’t have one. I think killing people is wrong, so I’m not in the army. My tax dollars still go to fund it, though (in fact about 21 cents of each of my tax dollars). My tax dollars also go to keep prisoners on death row even though I think the death penalty is morally wrong. My tax dollars fund Guantanamo and Bagram, extraordinary rendition, and Jim DeMint’s salary, all of which I find disgusting. So why is abortion, a legal medical procedure, so remarkably different that we have to go overboard making sure tax dollars don’t fund it?

Obviously women come to see sex as the sum of their worth because society tends to do the same, while men aren’t forced to struggle with the same debased equation. […] This is the ugly underbelly of being a distractingly good-looking woman: You have to feel pretty good about who you are on the inside to stay focused on it when most of the people around you just can’t shut up about how hot you are.

(The following is not me bragging. You’re going to have to trust me on this.)
My girlfriend is distractingly beautiful. In any room all eyes, male and female, are on her. We’ve had some negotiations about me calling her ‘beautiful.’ She doesn’t like it. Ms. Havrilesky (a great writer, check her out on Salon and rabbitblog) hits the particular difficulties of being a beautiful woman square on the head and she needs no help from me to further her thesis. But, being the boyfriend of a beautiful woman can also be difficult, especially when you actually love her and want to make her feel good about herself.
My advice to you, should you ever find yourself in this predicament, men, is to listen to her. Appreciate her for what she is inside. The outside stuff is something she’s been appreciated and valued for her whole life, by other men, her family, teachers, bosses, friends, etc. Be the one person in her life that really sees her. And try to find a word only you can use to tell her how beautiful she is, one word that isn’t freighted with baggage.
My negotiations with my girlfriend rendered up just such a word, a word no one had ever used to describe her. It’s a word that makes her smile and kiss me every time. That word is a secret.
